Day 311: Eleven.Twelve.13

I spend a majority of my time these days thinking about space. My space. Community space. Other people’s awesome space. Most specifically, how we are going to convince people with space to give us that space. So we can turn it into awesome creative community space for all to benefit from.

Flash backwards a few weeks; my boss offered his space – a bar and restaurant – for us to run a weekly party. No begging. No coaxing. No strings attached. He just, well, tried to convince us we should take it.

I ALMOST SAID NO.

I’m not a promoter, I thought.

I don’t know enough people who will come out on a Wednesday night and spend money at a bar to make this viable, I thought.

This isn’t my ideal space, I thought.

Flash forwards a few weeks; our party starts Wednesday, December 4th and I’m SO excited about it.

After talking to my collaborators, it became clear how insanely dumb it would be to pass up free, no strings attached space.

So what if it’s not exactly what I envision my space to look like, I thought.

We will make it exactly what we envision a creative party to be like, I thought.

We will find the people to come because it’s a great enough concept to get them there, I thought.

It will include all the ‘d’ things that make a party great – DJ, dancing, drink specials… Ours though. Ours will be focused on the ‘a’ things – the art and artists that make this city special. With a little out of the box thinking we have turned a usual thing into something that makes us at ReSourceArts all geeked out – highlighting all the awesome that’s coming out of the creative community in DC, sharing that with the DC community at large, and having everyone benefit from it. (Think art being sold, deals and specials on cool stuff being offered, raffles on one-of-a-kind pieces and experiences, all while there is great music playing and friendly bartenders pouring your favorite drinks…)

And the biggest lesson I have learned as I grow into my youthful years of wisdom; I don’t have to do all of this all alone. I’m amassing a small but mighty team with the skill sets to make this awesome.

More info on the party will be available HERE.

Day 134: Five.Nineteen.13

My last time helping out at a series of private events.

I love the space, the food, the presentation. When in Philly, you should take a trip to visit them. Grab a coffee, some food from their all-day brunch menu (I particularly love their huevos rancheros), sit upstairs in the library, and enjoy.

Day 50: Two.TwentyFour.13

Several months ago I responded to a facebook post from my favorite local coffee shop looking for someone to help them when they host private events. I help out maybe once every few months or so. It’s not at all my background – I have never worked in the service industry – but I truly enjoy the few times I have done this. Here’s why:

While I had absolutely nothing to do with the delicious food displayed in the above picture, I do get to help make it all look pretty. My Virgo, party-planning skills put to good use.

The owners, and all of the staff, work hard and believe in what they do. It shows in everything, from the decor to the delicious coffee and food. This is why I enjoy hanging out there so much, and why I enjoy being a part of these events. It’s a wonderful philosophy and one I hope to take with me as I move into new career endeavors:

do what you love, and do it the best that you possibly can (and then some).

Day 42: Two.Sixteen.13

Today was my moving party. Well, more accurately my going away party. I love entertaining – mostly the decor and ambiance side of things. I also did the cooking (it was all edible, hooray)! Event planning is a career track I could see myself enjoying. If I didn’t have this innate need to do something philanthropic that is. Although, I suppose the event and party planning I do through my non-profit career, as well as my own organization totally fits the bill for creating parties for good.

At this particular party, I set up a Kraft Korner – a ton of random crafting goods I have accumulated, that I didn’t want to pack and take with me. I was expecting a few friends to indulge me and decorate a candle holder or something. I had NO idea the ENTIRE crew would get into it and create some of the coolest pieces of re-purposed art around! (mobile, framed drawing and collage, bouquets of flowers…) Instead of getting rid of things, I now have even more to pack because they all left their amazing pieces for me, sigh!

Day 39: Two.Thirteen.13

I have a jumble of things I have accumulated in my apartment – handy at one time or another – that I no longer wish to drag with me from one place to the next.

Throw them into a landfill you say? No way, not me.

So. In advance of my going away party this weekend, I have assembled them strategically in the alcove where my tv is supposed to sit. (The tv is part of the collection I am parting with.) Tonight I made a sign, out of materials I had lying around, that reads, “Take Me Home Tonight.” My hope is that the combination of my clever (hehe) Valentine’s Day-themed craft project, coupled with copious amounts of yummy drinks we will be serving up will have people taking pity on me, and then taking home my no-longer-needed goods.

That’s right Mother Earth, I’m looking out for YOU.
